The Tallest Man on Earth- live in NYC

Just last month Swedish artist, Kristian Matsson aka The Tallest Man on Earth released his brilliant sophomore LP, The Wild Hunt. Matsson has been called Sweden's very own version of a modern day Bob Dylan, and it's not only due to his vocal stylings, but TTMOE can craft a story with his words with the best of them. He first gained some notoriety here in the U.S. while supporting Bon Iver on his tour dates, wowing crowds that showed up early.
Pitchfork TV recently captured The Tallest Man on Earth playing some intimate live acoustic performances in the Highline Park in NYC, where he played, "The Wild Hunt" and "King of Spain" off the new LP.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: New single & Summer tour

N.Y. popsters, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart recently announced plans for a new single called "Say No to Love" which will come out digitally this June 8th on Slumberland records. The band is also set to embark on a 2week U.S. tour this summer with supporting acts Surfer Blood and Hooray for Earth.

In other band news, the Pains are planning the recording of their sophomore LP, the follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed self-titled debut.

Here's what Kip from the band had to say in a message from the group ..."In many ways, "Say No to Love" is pretty Pains-by-numbers. It's got 3 chords, a fuzz pedal and lots of feelings. But instead of recording in the basement like we did for our album and both EPs, we recorded in an actual studio (Stratosphere Sound in New York). We tried hard to make it sound, as Peggy would say, "life affirming" and we're pretty excited about how it turned out. We hope you are too.

Pains of Being Pure at Heart on tour:
06/03 Milford, CT Daniel Street
06/04 Rochester, NY The German House
06/05 Buffalo, NY The Tralf
06/06 Cleveland, OH Beachland Ballroom

'Song of the Week'- The Black Keys- "Tighten Up"

I'm admittedly not the biggest Black Keys fan, but the bands lead single "Tighten Up" off their forthcoming LP, Brothers, has been on heavy repeat lately on the iPod. The track has some extra groove to it, thanks to Danger Mouse who produced the song.
The new disc follows up 2008's 'Attack & Release', and will hit stores this May 18 on Nonesuch Records.

'Song of the Week': 'Frightened Rabbit-"Not Miserable"

When I last spoke to Frightened Rabbit fromtman, Scott Hutchinson about what was next for the band and the pressure of their next record, he stated ...."Does anyone want to hear me sing a break-up song again? I think I've covered it." Indeed following up 08's brilliant The Midnight Organ Fight was no easy task for the band, with critics and fans falling in love with the brutally honest and personal take of Hutchinson's dissolved relationship on that disc. It's definitely one of my favorite albums of the last several years and with the new disc hitting stores, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, I was anxious to hear the bands latest direction. So often in life high expectations just fall short, but I honestly have to say that the disc sucked me in on it's first listen and has been growing on me more and more with each additional spin. Granted it's not another break-up record, but what did you expect 'The Midnight Organ Fight pt2'? The disc shows a writer moving forward after the chaos of his relationship, maturing in front of us, and dealing with the pieces that are left. Hutchinson to me, cements himself as one of the best songwriters around right now, the guy just flat out knows how to capture the uneasyness of love.
In "Footshooter" he sings...."And if I shoot at you, you should shoot at me too. And we can drown in pools of the thick dark words we threw" and there's this from "Swim Until You Can't See Land" ..."Let’s call me a baptist, call this the drowning of the past, She’s there on the shoreline, throwing stones at my back."
There's still the same charm in the music that 'TMOF' had and the band expanded their line-up, and streched the depth of their sound, but if I had to some up 'The Winter of Mixed Drinks' I would have you listen to one of my favorites off the disc,"Not Miserable" to show just how Hutchinson is moving forward, and so should fans expecting another 'Midnight Organ Fight'. Check it out below.

"Not Miserable"

Well this is easier now
I found all the pieces I lost in the flood
And it wasn't that much
And though it's easier now
I will always remember the night that I almost drowned
All alone in a house

And the love that I lost
With all of the shit that came out in the wash
Just a pocket of fluff
I'm not put upon
I am free of from disease no greys, no liver-spots
Most of the misery's gone... gone, gone to the bone

I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable

So the hymns that I sung
Prayers for the fucked, from a bitter, forked tongue
Sing of history now
Though the corners are lit
The dark can return with the flick of a switch
It hasn't turned on me yet, yet

I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows

I'm not miserable now
No one knows
No one knows
I'm not miserable

Well this is easier now
I found all the pieces I lost in the flood
And it wasn't that much

and here's our previously mentioned interview with Scott from 2008.

Song of the Week': Damien Jurado-"Arkansas"

In my opinion one of the most under looked songwriters out there, Damien Jurado, will soon be releasing his new album, Saint Bartlett, on Secretly Canadian this May 25th. For the new disc Jurado teamed up with fellow label mate Richard Swift who helped produce the LP. Saint Bartlett was recorded entirely at Swift’s National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.
You can get familiar with the new song, "Arkansas" below.
And if your like us and your into all things Jurado, don't miss his latest side project with his brother Drake called, Hoquiam. They just released a new album last month on St. Ives records. Check them out here.

'Wednesday in Words': 'Mumford & Sons- "The Cave"

Completely fell in love with this UK groups music when I first heard their song, "The Cave." The band jsut recently saw the release of their debut album, Sigh No More in the U.S. last month, after earning rave reviews overseas.
The band also just announced a new round of North American tour dates this May and June which you can check out at their website www.mumfordandsons.com

Mumford & Sons- "The Cave":
It's empty in the valley of your heart
The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Cause I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's hand

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Gaslight Anthem announce new album coming this Spring

The Gaslight Anthem have been hard at work recording their follow-up to 2008's breakthrough album, The ‘59 Sound. The new album will be called American Slang and it is due to be released this June 15 on SideOneDummy records.
For the forthcoming LP the band has been teamed up with producer Ted Hutt at The Magic Shop in NYC, and frontman Brian Fallon has recently told NME that the new disc will see the New Jersey based group step away from their influences.
“For the last record we looked really into it and we asked ‘What are our influences and how do we jam them in?’”.... “And on this one, we’re writing songs that we feel are relevant to us.”

Speaking of influences, check out this great performance of the band from Hyde Park in London jamming with one of their idols, Bruce Springsteen, who joined the guys for the song, "The '59 Sound."
