new music from Weinland

With a lot of great folk/acoustic music streaming out of Portland, Oregon these days, it's no surprise that Weinland may have flew under some people's radar. The group put out a fantastic disc in 2008 called La Lamentor which included the stellar songs, "Sick as a Gun" and "God Here I Come" to name a few. Just last week the group put out their newest effort, Breaks in The Sun, which from the pieces that I've had the chance to hear, features more of the same intimate acoustic tunes and heartfelt song writing from frontman John Weinland Shearer.
Take a listen to one of the new discs tracks, 'People Like You" below.

After a comeback in 2005 and a triumphant new album in 2007, Dinosaur Jr not only got back on everyone's radar, but they reminded them that they were one of the forefathers of indie, slacker-rock. The new disc titled, Farm is getting a release this June 23 on Jagjaguwar, and it features twelve new tracks, including, "I Want You to Know," which is available as a free download if you go here.

'Song of the Week': Cortney Tidwell-"17 Horses"

Having grown up in and around the music biz most of her life, Cortney Tidwell is no stranger to the ups and downs of the music world. Growing up in Nashville, TN, her grandfather had been a successful recording artist, her father was a veteran A&R man, and her mother had several singles on the country charts in the 1970s, and the family was close friends with the likes of Townes Van Zandt and 'Cowboy' Jack Clement. In the mid-'70s however Tidwell's mom was diagnosed with manic depression, her parents soon after split up, and she passed at the young age of 49. Tidwell gave up playing after a while due to her associating the music with the pain that her childhood brought.
But after a break away from things, Cortney eventually returned to songwriting, playing in a punk band for a bit, before delving more into her solo work, which resulted in an EP in 2006, and her full length debut Dont' Let the Stars Keep Us Tangled Up in '07. Much more than your typical Nashville singer/songwriter Tidwelll's music is hard to classify, taking cues from all over the map, and giving it a fresh spin.
She's coming out with a new disc, Boys which will be released on May 29th on City Slang Records. The first track i've heard off the disc, "17 Horses" is a driving number that showcases Cortney's powerful and emotional vocals. The album was co-produced by Cortney , her husband Todd Tidwell and Ryan Norris, and contains 11 new tracks, including a duet with Jim James (My Morning Jacket). 'Boys' will be preceded by the release of a single, "Watusii", as a 12” and download starting on May 15th, but right now the song "17 Horses" is available on the City Slang website and you can download it for free here.

Boys track list:
Solid State
Watusii
Son & Moon
Being Crosby
Oslo
So We Sing

new video: We Were Promised Jetpacks-"Quiet Little Voices"

We've had our eyes and ears on these guys for a while now, the Scottish four piece, We Were Promised Jetpacks. Drawing comparisons to fellow Glasgow bands like The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit is high praise, but well deserved for this young and intense group. Their soon to be released debut titled, These Four Walls from Fat Cat Records comes out this June, and the first single off the LP, "Quiet Little Voices", is available this May 4 as a 7" single and digital download via the Fatcat website here. In other band news they just released a new video for the track which you can see below.

Bowerbirds- new album coming this summer

I didn't know too much about the Bowerbirds besides their track "In Our Talons" before I saw them open up for Bon Iver at a show last year. The quiet North Carolina three piece impressed with their Americana driven, nu-folk sound, and made me want to check out more of their work from their debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse which came out in in 2007.
After some long tours with the aforementioned Bon Iver and also with The Mountaingoats, the trio headed back into the studio and are now ready with their sophomore disc, Upper Air which hits stores this July 7, on Dead Oceans. Jessica Lea Mayfield plays daytrotter session (download 3 free tracks)

If you haven't listened to all our past hype trying to get you to listen to young singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield, here's yet another opportunity to catch what you've been missing. As good as Jessica's phenomenal debut album, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt is, seeing her live takes on a whole new dimension into her intimate and melancholy tracks. We had the chance to catch her live in Brussels a few weeks back, where she played with a great full band, which also added a raw power to the LP's sparse tracks.
You now can hear a sample of Jessica live, as she recently stopped by the studios of Daytrotter for a live session, where she played three tracks off of the new disc, 'Kiss Me Again", "I'm Not Lonely Anymore", and an intense version of one of my personal favorites off the disc, "Bible Days." You can download the session here

Longtime members of the Athens, Ga. music scene, Modern Skirts have kept some pretty weighty company along the way. With fellow Athens supporters like Michael Stipe and Mike Mills in their corner the group has had a whirlwind past couple of years, which includes an opening slot for REM in Europe. William Fitzsimmons: Live from Philly (4/16)

There may not be a bigger roller coaster of emotions than attending a William Fitzsimmons concert. If you're familiar with Fitzsimmons' music, then you're well aware of the personal nature, intimacy and emotion that he puts into his songs. But what some people may not know about Fitzsimmons, is his uncanny wit and sarcastic comedic side. William is well known for his hilarious blog posts called 'Musings From the Beard', and is probably one of the funniest guys you'll come across. So when we caught Fitzsimmons' show in Philadelphia the other night at the Tin Angel (to see the photo gallery click here) , it was no surprise that the laughter and tears (so to speak) were ever present throughout his intense set.
Blending in tracks from all three of his LP's, Fitzsimmons had the crowd pin drop silent on newer tracks like "You Still Hurt Me" and 'Just Not Each Other", while older favorites like "It' Not True" and 'Passion Play" received raucous receptions from the sold out venue. In between songs, William was always engaged with the crowd, talking and joking on everything from, flannels, being one outfit away from being homeless, and how he's going to start writing happy songs, to a heartfelt thanks to the the crowd for supporting singer/songwriters. Always apologizing for his 'depressing music' as he would say, William manages to keep the atmosphere light and the crowd in good spirits. Other highlights of the night besides William's standout guitar skills, included a surprise cover of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin", new song "Find Me To Forgive" which William says is his personal favorite right now, the track "Hazy" by opening act Rosi Golan who came out for a duet, and the simply beautiful closing track "Good Morning."

get to know: Headless Heroes

Late last year we talked about the group Headless Heroes, and their outstanding LP of cover songs titled, The Silence of Love. The disc came out in Europe and the UK back in '08, and it is finally getting it's release in the US this coming May 19. The collaborative effort features singer Alela Diane on vocals along with Eddie Bezalel and Hugo Nicolson, who put together the project, finding Diane via her Myspace page. Where most covers albums can be quite boring, 'The Silence of Love' has some truly great interpretations, ranging from tracks by Daniel Johnston, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Vashti Bunyan, and even The Jesus & Mary Chain's, "Just Like Honey" which you can check out below.

Frontman, John J. McCauley III of Brooklyn's, Deer Tick got some new recruits for his new LP, Born On Flag Day. The new disc comes out this June 23, on Partisan Records, and follows up Deer Tick's critically successful '07 debut, 'War Elephant', which McCauley penned and recorded mostly himself. Looking for a more collaborative effort this time around, McCauley III recruited 3 new members, Andy Tobiassen, Dennis Ryan and Chris Ryan. Known for his distinct vocals, melancholy lyrics and alt-country sound, McCauley and Deer Tick are ready to take things to the next level on the new disc, seeing a natural evolution as a writer and a band. Regina Spektor: New album this June

After almost 3 years since her last album, I had almost forgotten how much I liked Regina Spektor's 2006 LP, Begin To Hope. But after hearing news of the NYC based, Russian born Spektor's new album, Far, coming out this June 23, via Sire Records, I quickly remembered just how impressive her last disc was.
As for the new disc, 'Far', Spektor brought on board more than a few big named producers to lend a hand, ranging from "Jacknife" Lee and 'Begin to Hope' producer David Kahne, to Mike Elizondo and Travelling Willbury himself, Jeff Lynne.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan coming to the States

On the surface it's probably one of the most unlikely pairings you could imagine. The dark and menacing baritone that is Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age, Screaming Trees, Gutter Twins), and the soft angelic voice of Isobel Campbell(Belle and Sebastien), but somehow it's worked. It's worked so well in fact that the pair recently came out with their second effort, Sunday At Devil Dirt. The sophomore album which has been out overseas in the UK and Europe since May, continues to see the duo explore their rootsy alt-country, folk and blues sounds, similar to their '06 debut, 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas' which received wide spread acclaim.
The pair had yet to bring their live show to the US in support of 'Sunday at Devil Dirt', but it's been announced that they will soon be performing in the States together, with three dates scheduled just next month in NY and California.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan tour dates:
May 27 New York, NY Webster Hall
May 30 San Francisco, CA Bimbo’s
May 31 Los Angeles, CA The El Rey

'Song of the Week'- get to know Piers Faccini

With an Italian Father, an English Mother, and his family moving him to France when he was 5, it's no wonder that singer/songwriter Piers Faccini sounds as nomadic as his life has been. Faccini, who was actually born in London and speaks four languages, considers himself to be a bit of a mongrel, being able to absorb different cultures and music from around the world.
Faccini released his first solo album in 2004 to critical acclaim in France and much of Europe, and is now out with his latest LP, Two Grains of Sand, which saw a release in the States just last week. The new disc features some really stunning, intimate tracks, but the best of the lot is the new track, " A Storm Is Going to Come " which you can listen to below.
